Volunteer for Send Silence Packing @ Penn (September 9, 2021)

Would you like to help support mental wellness in the Penn community?

A dozen Penn student groups and academic programs have already joined together to start a positive conversation surrounding mental wellness and provide community-wide resources to students by bringing Send Silence Packing® to Penn’s campus on September 9th.

What is Send Silence Packing?

Send Silence Packing® is a traveling public education display of more than 500 backpacks with the goal of ending silence around mental health and suicide and connecting visitors to resources for support and action.

This acclaimed program from Active Minds, Inc. aims to promote a positive dialogue about mental health on college campuses with messages such as “you are not alone” and “keep going, the world needs you here!”

Groups that have already joined the effort include CAPS, Penn Wellness, Wharton MBA, Wharton Undergrad, Dental School, Vet School, First Year Program, Engineering, Active Minds, PRISM, Zeta Beta Tau, Delta Delta Delta, Kappa Alpha Theta, Sigma Alpha Mu, SPARC, Club Soccer, Club Basketball, CAPSAB, the Chaplain’s Office, and CogWell.

Volunteer at the event!

We need you! There are individual volunteer opportunities to help set up, host, and clean up the event on Thursday, September 9th. Please sign up here: Volunteer SIGN UP: Send Silence Packing!.

You can also email cogwellupenn@gmail.com if you and/or your student group would like to support the cause in any way or have questions about the event!

Scholarships

James Dyson Award

James Dyson Award.

What is the James Dyson Award?

The James Dyson Award is an international design award that celebrates, encourages and inspires the next generation of design engineers. The challenge is simple: design something that solves a problem.

Who can enter?

It is open to current university students of engineering, product design and industrial design – and those who have graduated in these subjects in the last four years. We’ll ask to see official documentation that proves it.

What can you win?

Students that enter have the opportunity to win $2,500 as a national winner and $35,000 as an international winner, along with a donation of $6,000 to the departments that supported them. New this year! We will offer an additional $35,000 prize for the sustainability award winner, which is the best entry that addresses an environmental issue. The award not only provides an opportunity for students to commercialize their ideas through funding, it also provides an international media platform and exposure which has allowed previous winners such as MarinaTex, a home compostable material designed as an alternative single-use plastic films, to develop into businesses. Be sure to also check out our US National Winner, Thipok Cholsaipant, who is the inventor of Aerolyze, the world’s first breath glucometer for prediabetics. By replacing blood with a breath, the design eliminates the pain and inconvenience of pricking your finger altogether. .
