Students in the Kelly Writers House First-Year Seminar have spent the semester discovering what it means to work in and around the “third space” of the Writers House as poets, fiction writers, journalists, and scholars. We’ve had readings, author visits, workshops, field trips, and excursions into the practice of literary curation – now it’s our turn. Come hear a selection of works created by students themselves! All are welcome; lunch will be served.

4A and Front Row Theatre Company Present “By the Way, Meet Vera Stark”

By the Way, Meet Vera Stark by Lynn Nottage is a modern play set predominantly in Hollywood of the 1930’s. It follows a group of young actresses who struggle with racial stereotyping in Hollywood. Vera Stark, an African-American maid, stars in a controversial antebellum film, taking the role of a slave despite her principles against taking such roles. Decades later, Vera’s groundbreaking performance is debated by scholars and film critics, interrogating Vera’s legacy in Hollywood and the impact of race on her career. We seek to seed impactful projects, grounded in outstanding Penn research, that will offer new ideas to enhance the quality of life for members of our Philadelphia community now and in the future. Project proposals from diverse teams—broadly conceived—will receive priority consideration.

Each winning team will receive up to $100,000 to implement their proposed initiative. Project proposals should be focused on making progress toward one or more of the following goals:

• Eradicating systemic racism
• Achieving educational equity

Penn Spark presents Penn Place

This semester, Penn Spark is excited to present Penn Place: a collaborative digital art experiment that invites Penn students to create 3D art in a shared voxel grid. Inspired by Reddit’s r/place, our platform allows users to place colored voxels (blocks) in a 3D space, building and shaping a dynamic digital canvas in real-time. The concept merges interactive 3D art with Penn’s campus culture, offering students a unique opportunity to collectively shape a one-of-a-kind visual experience.

Penn Place will be online for a limited time from December 1st to December 7th at noon. We invite students, faculty, clubs, or anyone on campus to make creative contributions on the platform, celebrating the end of the semester in a fun, creative 3D digital experience.

Best experienced on a laptop or desktop device.
