It’s that time of year again. Penn GEMS is happening this summer: June 27 – July 1, 2022  We need counselors. This is a Co-Ed week long summer camp, for middle school students.

Are you going to be in Philly June 27 – July 1? Do you like to talk to young people about engineering? Advancing Women in Engineering is looking for counselors (all engineering students welcome to apply!) for our Penn GEMS summer camp. From June 27-July 1, middle school students will be on campus to learn more about engineering and we need your help.

Counselors are needed from 8:30-4:30pm each day and will be paid for their time and provided lunch.

There will be a tentative training for counselors who are selected in June. Training will be no longer than 2 hours and you will be paid for it.  Dates and times/format to be determined.

We are looking for energetic, enthusiastic, creative and fun students who like working with preteens and teens. The middle school students who are coming to this camp really look up to you and are intrigued and excited about engineering. Help AWE introduce engineering as a possibility for their futures.

Penn Leads the Vote (PLTV)! Spring Primary Election

This spring, our campus community will join the rest of Pennsylvania in voting for candidates for a wide range of political offices including Governor, United States Senate, the House of Representatives, and State Legislature. 

While the election is not until May 17th, you can make a plan TODAY to ensure your vote is counted.

Since this is a closed primary election, you must be registered with a party to vote for office candidates in the primary. Take two minutes to register to vote or confirm your party affiliation. If you do not select a party affiliation, you will be allowed to vote on ballot measures.

Right now: Find your polling location,  make a plan to go on election day, and block out time on your calendar to vote

  • If you prefer to vote by mail, request your mail-in ballot online and make a plan to return it when received. Your ballot request must be received by May 10th, and your voted ballot returned by May 17th. However we suggest you complete the mail-in voting process as soon as possible.

  • If you live in Philadelphia and prefer to vote early in-person at City Hall, block out time during business hours in your calendar to visit the County Board of Elections Office between April 18th and May 10th.

  1. Volunteer: This is a high impact, low commitment opportunity for those who want to multiply your impact. Volunteers receive free PLTV swag and get priority access to events like National Voter Registration Day.
  2. Fellowships: If you are looking for a longer, more professionally-oriented opportunity to support voting and civic engagement on campus, a fellowship is for you! Fellows work closely with PLTV staff to complete high impact projects over the course of the semester.
  3. Paid Positions: PLTV is hiring an undergraduate partnerships coordinator and diversity and inclusion coordinator. Lavender Graduation 2022

Graduating from Penn and LGBTQ+? Then we want to celebrate you! Attend the LGBT Center’s Lavender Graduation where the focus is on you, your triumphs, and your hard work. Being involved with the Center is not required. Plus, we have gifts for you. Registration must be received by Sunday, May 1,2022. Register here if you’re graduating.

What is the James Dyson Award?

The James Dyson Award is an international design award that celebrates, encourages, and inspires the next generation of design engineers. The challenge is simple: design something that solves a problem.

Who can enter?

It is open to current university students of engineering, product design, and industrial design – and those who have graduated in these subjects in the last four years. We’ll ask to see official documentation that proves it.

What can you win?

Students that enter have the opportunity to win $2,500 as a national winner and $35,000 as an international winner, along with a donation of $6,000 to the departments that supported them. New this year! We will offer an additional $35,000 prize for the sustainability award winner, which is the best entry that addresses an environmental issue. The award not only provides an opportunity for students to commercialize their ideas through funding, it also provides an international media platform and exposure which has allowed previous winners such as MarinaTex, a home compostable material designed as an alternative single-use plastic film, to develop into businesses. Platt House is seeking an App Designer

Platt House is seeking a designer to create a user friendly app where student artists can connect with other student artists for projects and independent work. We would like to call it Debut or something similar and a description is below.  Compensation will be provided and determined before work is started.

Debut is an app for student artists looking to connect on short term projects. Debut provides a platform for student artists to connect, portfolio-build, and gain experience. This role would require the ability to program an app and would provide creative development and leadership opportunities.

Airport Cooperative Research Program's University Design Competition (DEADLINE for submissions: May 13, 2022)

The FAA-sponsored Airport Cooperative Research Program’s University Design Competition for Addressing Airport Needs provides an outstanding opportunity for individual students or student teams working under the guidance of faculty advisors to design solutions to real world issues addressing our nation’s airports and the National Air System.

Students win cash prizes ($3,000 for first place, $2,000 for second, and $1,000 for third place) in each of four different broad categories:

  • Airport Operation and Maintenance
  • Airport Management and Planning
  • Airport Environmental Interactions
  • Runway Safety/ Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions Including Aprons, Ramps, and Taxiway

A variety of multidisciplinary topics are suggested, but students can come up with their own relevant topics for their design solution.

First place winners present their work at an award ceremony at the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine in Washington, D.C. and also at a relevant national professional conference.  All expenses are covered.

Hospitality Services Hiring for Summer 2022

Hospitality Services is hiring for Summer 2022! We have a number of student positions available.  Please see below for list of summer positions and brief description.

 

This Summer we have the following roles available:

Guest Services Attendant:

The Guest Services Attendant will share in the responsibility of making each student, conference, and program participant feel welcome on Penn’s campus. They serve as front-line customer service representative and central service provider for residential and visiting guests. Provide administrative support to the Guest Services Manager and the Residential Services Manager in the management of access, emergency room assignments, and daily report logs. Work in cooperation with the Information Centers to support move-in/move-outs, facilities issues, and coverage for other Information Centers as needed. This individual will assist with all phases of Information Center operations including, but not limited to, providing excellent customer service, creation of move-in materials, access management, and providing prompt follow-up on facilities and housekeeping concerns. The Guest Services Attendant supports and fosters the customer service goals of Hospitality Services. Compensation for this role will be $12.00 per hour.

Guest Services Manager:

The Guest Services Manager will play a vital role in presenting Penn as a hospitable, service-oriented institution. The Guest Services Manager assists the Residential Services Manager in providing overall management for the day-to-day operation of the Information Center. They serve as the buildings primary contact for Hospitality Services staff, FRES and Building Operations group, residential program leaders and additional university partners. This role will manage the building Information Center and train, supervise, and assign work to the Guest Services Attendants in conjunction with the Residential Services Manager. They will assist RSM with documenting, evaluating, and following up on facilities requests. Assists with front-line management of emergency response to events (fire alarms, facilities emergencies, etc.). Coordinates response with appropriate staff. This role will participate in an on-call rotation during evenings and weekends and communicate on-call activity. The Guest Services Manager required duties include, but are not limited to, managing student staff, communicating guest & conference information to Hospitality Services, leading weekly staff meetings, ensuring Guest Services Attendants are successful in their positions, and providing front-line service on a regular basis. Compensation for this role will be $13.00 per hour.

Hospitality Intern:

The Hospitality Intern serves in a cross-functional capacity and is responsible for assisting in the operations of Hospitality Services. This position reports directly to the Associate Directors, Program Manager, and Coordinators. Each intern will have an area of focus (events, operations, front-line) but will support the entire Hospitality Services team. Each Hospitality Intern must have very flexible work availability; some weekend work is required. The hospitality Intern required duties include, but are not limited to, answering main phone line & email account, & responding to customer inquiries. Perform data collection and entry, communicate with clients and participants, check individual/program content for accuracy, double check information, & assist in the preparation and distribution of materials Communication with internal partners including Housing, Dining, Catering, Transportation, PennCard, and others. Perform additional duties as assigned & provide support for other areas as needed. Compensation for this role will be $13.00 per hour.

Hospitality Operations Assistant:

The Hospitality Operations Assistant will play a vital role in the various ‘behind the scenes’ projects that create a seamless & customer-focused operation and present Penn as a hospitable, service-oriented institution. The Operations Assistants perform varied physical, facilities-related, and logistical tasks in support of summer operations including, but not limited to helping guests with move-in & move-out processes. They will provide set-up, breakdown, parking & traffic control support for large program events and move-in/move-out days. Perform inspection of facilities to identify life safety issues, housekeeping issues, and condition of facilities. The Operations Assistant will be responsible for distribution of guest amenities, inventory management, floating Information Center coverage, and maintaining clean storage areas as needed. Compensation for this role will be $12.00 per hour.

Hospitality Operations Manager:

The Hospitality Operations Manager will lead in the responsibility of making each student, conference, and program participant feel welcome on Penn’s campus. This individual will train and supervise a team of Operations Assistants; together the team will play a vital role in the various ‘behind the scenes’ projects that create a seamless & customer-focused operation and present Penn as a hospitable, service-oriented institution. The Operations Manager will oversee logistical and operational projects including, but not limited to; signage, staffing & payroll, move-ins & move-outs, parking control, cart management, amenity delivery, facilities inspections, storage organization and inventory. As a project leader in the field the Operation Manger schedules and assigns work to inspection teams, responsible for quality control of inspections (safety issues, housekeeping issues, and condition of facilities), and makes sure inspections are handled in a responsible, appropriate, and timely manner. This person will lead weekly Hospitality Operations staff meetings and set a positive and professional tone for his/her staff. This individual is also responsible for maintaining data on the status of facilities projects in summer buildings. Compensation for this role will be $13.00 per hour.

Information Technology Assistant:

The Information Technology Assistant (ITA) will share in the responsibility of making each student, conference, and program participant feel welcome and acclimated on Penn’s campus. This individual will assist guests with their technical needs including accessing the Penn Network and monitoring the computer labs to make sure the university’s equipment is properly maintained. The Information Technology Assistant required duties include but are not limited to; monitor and aid during computer lab shifts, ensuring that labs schedule is strictly followed and that the university’s equipment is monitored or always secured. According to conference move-in calendar, participate in “mini-crushes” (patches, scans, etc.) and AirPennNet connection sessions (laptops, mobile devices, gaming systems). Maintain excellent communication with the ITA Manager to make them aware of guest’s problems and needs. Compensation for this role will be $12.00 per hour.

Information Technology Manager:

The Information Technology Manager will supervise a team of Information Technology Assistants (ITAs). The ITA Manager has the overall responsibility for the open labs and will work to create seamless & customer-focused operational processes. This person will lead weekly ITA staff meetings and set a positive and professional tone for his/her staff. This position participates in staff orientation and in an on-call rotation during evenings and weekends and communicate on-call activity via written report. The Information Technology Manager will oversee computer labs in summer buildings and ITA staff, including but not limited to setting lab and staff schedules, leading ITA staff meetings, implementing staff training, and working with the ADO to submit staff payroll. They Participate in covering lab shifts and according to conference move-in calendar, schedule staff for “mini-crushes” (patches, scans, etc.) and AirPennNet connection sessions (laptops, mobile devices, gaming systems).

Compensation for this role will be $13.00 per hour.

Summer Community Advisor:

The Summer Community Advisor (SCA) will share in the responsibility of making each student, conference, and program participant feel welcome on Penn’s campus. The Community Advisor acts as a university liaison and campus resource for approximately 30-60 students residing in on-campus housing during the summer months. This position requires administrative, programming, and judicial duties pertaining to your residents. The Summer Community Advisor reports to the Summer Residential Director. This position serves in the On-Duty rotation for after-hours student issues. This is a live-in position and free on-campus housing is provided. The Summer Community Advisor required duties include but are not limited to establish and maintain relationships with residents by meeting on a weekly basis. Be sensitive and aware of potential issues and how to address them in a supportive manner. Create programming that supports the needs of your residents. Respond to residents’ academic, social, and personal concerns/questions in a timely manner. Serve as an advocate for the students’ needs and concerns. Balance the student voice with the institutional needs. Compensation for this role will be $12.00 per hour.

Senior Summer Community Advisor (SrSCA):

The Senior Summer Community Advisor (SSCA) will share in the responsibility of making each student, conference, and program participant feel welcome on Penn’s campus. The Sr. Community Advisor acts as a university liaison and campus resource for approximately 30-60 students residing in on-campus housing during the summer months and manages Summer Community Advisors. This position requires administrative, programming, and judicial duties pertaining to your residents. This is a live-in position and free on-campus housing is provided. The Senior Summer Community Advisor reports to the Summer Residential Director. This position serves in the On-Duty rotation for after-hours student issues. 2022 ExxonMobil LOFT Fellowship Program (App Due May 15)

ExxonMobil LOFT Fellowship

ExxonMobil Corporation, the largest publicly traded international energy company, has partnered with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) to create fellowship opportunities in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) for Hispanic college students. Through HHF’s Latinos On Fast Track (LOFT) program, ExxonMobil seeks to nurture motivated college students across the country, with a passion for Engineering and Science.

Selected students will be exposed to a top-quality company by participating in this signature mentoring program. Each student will be paired up with an ExxonMobil professional to learn how their knowledge and skills are applied in a corporate setting.

Fellowship Components
The Fellowship consists of five 1-hour meetings with a mentor (virtual or in person), participation in the Harvard-certified ExxonMobil mentee program (on-line), an exclusive curriculum to introduce Fellows to ExxonMobil and career opportunities, and a $1,000 educational grant. In addition, there exists the possibility to interview for ExxonMobil positions (internships/full-time) upon successful completion of the Fellowship.

Fellowship Requirements
This opportunity is highly competitive and open to rising sophomores, juniors, Seniors, and Graduate Students attending a 4-year college or university.
Fellowship applicants with the following majors will be given priority:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Geoscience
  • Material Science and Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

Applicants with these majors will be considered also: Chemistry, Computer Science Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mathematics, Petroleum Engineering, and Physics.

Other Requirements:

  • Must plan to pursue a career in the fields/majors listed above
  • Have a GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States with a valid Social Security Number at the time of application. All legal permanent residents must submit a copy of their valid permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551 (not expired).
